Is your body golf-trained? |

“Let’s get this straight. That persisting backache you suffer from or those hurting knees and ankles are not caused by the four hours you spend on a golf course. A hurting body and bad round of golf is the result of the way you spend those hours on a course. Yes, I am talking about a wrong swing posture, grip and all the details that you as a golfer have overlooked. Here at Manipal Hospital we help these golfers to enhance their performance and reduce golf injuries,” says Dr. Chandra Siddaiah HOD and consultant, Dept. of sports medicine. Dr Chandra Siddaiah

After analyzing the golf injuries Dr. Chandra moves to something called the Performance Enhancement Technique (PET). “This includes training golfers to develop muscle strength, power and stamina. As a part of PET, we conduct a session called the Complete Spine Rehabilitation Strengthening Programme (CSRSP). It is not enough to train arm muscles for a better performance. We cannot neglect our lower back, which is affected the most in this sport. Through this programme we help golfers to strengthen the whole spine till the lower back,” says Dr. Chandra. Pritam Saikia, golf instructor and golf fitness specialist echoes Dr. Chandra’s concern about a strong body and trained muscles. “An average person while working out concentrates on his abs and chest muscles. He neglects his legs, glutes and ankles. These, however, are the key parts a golfer needs to concentrate on. Cardio is important but not as much as a work out regime, which increases mobility in your body. Why? The more mobility you have in your body, especially hips, the better your precision will be and the likeliness of an injured spine or lower back also reduces.” Pritam believes a good golfing posture includes mobile hips, strong knee muscles, strong neck and a sturdy back. How does one work on strengthening the mentioned body parts? “By a balanced work out regime. This is what I help out the golfers with, in my Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certified screening sessions. Having been a golfer for so many years also helps me analyze their weaknesses better.” Golf is a relaxed but very technical sport. Injuries are a part and parcel, like with any other outdoor activity that you get involved with. You do not need to work hard just smart. The specialists have said the mantra out aloud; stamina and mobility. “I do not speak for golf alone, for any sport you need to follow a balanced work out. You cannot concentrate on one aspect of your body and neglect the rest of it. But I think the new age sportsperson is more aware and then with more people specializing in it, sports medicine is now a very evolved concept in India,” says Pritam. |
