The Kodaikanal Golf Club |
|
Described as India’s most picturesque golf course, the Kodaikanal Golf Club was established in 1895 by a small group of British golfers, who were also the visionary architects for the course. Early members were British and American civil servants and missionaries, who gave the club much of the character that is still prevalent at the club. The 18 hole, par 71 course is located at an altitude of 7,000 feet and is around 6 km from the heart of town. KGC is a private club with over 600 members. Non-members are allowed to play the full 18 holes with a temporary membership enrolment or by paying the required green fees. Non-members need to present handicap cards from their club of origin, or enroll for customary orientation before they can play here.
KGC originally had 9 holes and the putting surfaces were largely brown; the course got its 18-hole circuit in the early fifties. In the mid-eighties, putting surfaces were relaid with greens. The par 71 course covers around 150 acres. Total length of the course is 6,426 yards (5,968 m). And it takes about 3 hours to play the entire course What you need to brace yourself for, is some big game company at the course. And don’t be surprised if you have an audience, in a herd of Gaur - the famed Indian Bison. As you go through your paces, you might hear some unique names given to some of the holes, depending on the degree of challenge. The 4th hole has for long been called the Devil's Dip – as you will see, the fairway from the tee-box to the green is an extremely steep dip, that seems to stretch forever. The 6th hole is named Tiger Hole because Tigers used to be sighted near it. The 12th hole is known as the Cardiac Hole – hold your breath here – because the terrain here can make your heart skip a beat; the stroke isn’t easy either. The 13th is known as the Twister and is not visible from the tee box. The 15th is often referred to as the “New Long'un” - because it has the longest yardage of 587 yards. The course here plays host to many traditionally popular tournaments - Palani Hill Open, Veday Cup, Rudrappan Memorial Cup, Contessa Open and the A V Thomas Tournament. In addition to the golf course, the club offers a practice net, designated practice area, driving range, conference room for 12 to 18 people, six cards room, billiards room and bar facilities. The course is closed for non-members from April 15 to June 15, because of the peak golfing season. |
